The Baker Street neighbourhood isn’t short on upmarket Chinese restaurants, but newcomer Bright Courtyard is serving up something a bit different. Founded by the Shanghai Life Fashion Group, it aims to emulate the original venue in Shanghai & reflect what middle-class Chinese are eating these days. There’s a sushi bar out front, & the attractive, red-walled dining room is all high-gloss surfaces, lanterns & candelabra. Meanwhile, the menu showcases tip-top ingredients for a mixed bag of dishes running from crispy smoked chicken to wasabi king prawns & an impressive plate of cold meats, eel & jellyfish full of crunchy, pungent, sticky flavours. A wine wall down one side of the room suggests an interest in the subject, but tea is also taken seriously. Service is pleasant & willing, & the venue has decent private dining facilities, too.
